Chemaliforms II: The Second Workshop on Chemistry and Artificial Life Forms

Description: “CHEMALIFORMS II - the Second Workshop on Chemistry and Artificial Life Forms” focuses on the life-like forms created in a laboratory using chemical and biochemical materials. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: wet artificial life, synthetic biology, origin of life, protocells, self-propelled droplets and other objects, chemobrionics, and messy chemistry. The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers interested in wet artificial life, namely chemists, physicists, biologists. Further, it is expected that computer scientists performing mathematical simulations of life-like phenomena in chemical systems and experts from robotic field that build the platforms for laboratory experiments automatization will participate as well.

Description: The Lifelike Computing Systems initiative aims to learn from the study of life and living systems to develop new, practical, computing systems that possess ‘lifelike' properties; a further goal is to identify when such complex features are of particular value to people, society, and the world. The initiative's focus lies primarily on engineered technological systems broadly within the domain of computing. The annual LIFELIKE workshop is intended to provide a forum for discussing new insights and implications from adopting Artificial Life principles to technical computing systems deployed to flexibly and robustly act in real-world environments.

ALife Ethics: Should Artificial Systems Have Rights?

 

Organizers:​ Olaf Witkowski and Eric Schwitzgebel 

​

Description: The moral considerability of artificial living systems might not be considerably reduced from the fact that they are non-human and evolve in a potentially radically different substrate, nor by the fact that they owe their existence to humans. On the contrary, their creation may come with additional moral obligations to them, which may be similar to those of an owner to their pet or a parent to their child. For a field that aims to create artificial lifeforms with increasing levels of sophistication, it is crucial to consider the possible implications of our activities under an ethical perspective, and infer the moral obligations for which we should be prepared. If artificial life is larger than life, then the ethics of artificial beings ought to be larger than human ethics. We invite everyone willing to take an active part in the workshop to contact the organizers in advance.
